Among the numerous features in the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, there are three that hit the sweet spot between real-world capability and on-road refinement.

First is the all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension system that lifts the vehicle up to 4.1 inches from Park mode to a maximum off-road height of 10.7 inches and delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and on-road performance.

Second is the all-new front and rear independent suspension with improved on-road ride and handling.

Third is an all-new V-6 engine that offers improved fuel economy, performance and refinement.

“Our all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee provides everything you expect in an SUV and more – more capability, technology, innovation and amenities,” said Phil Jansen, Chief Engineer Model Responsible — Grand Cherokee, Chrysler Group LLC. “Jeep Grand Cherokee is about premium on-road performance and legendary Jeep capability. We listened to our customers and took it to the next level, adding significantly improved on-road performance while maintaining the Jeep brand’s legendary four-wheel-drive capability.”

All-new Air Suspension

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee rises above the road and rocks with the all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Lift system features five height settings for optimum ride performance:

Normal Ride Height (NRH): 8.1 inches of clearance offers improved fuel economy as well as improved aerodynamics during on-road driving

Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.3 inches for added height in clearing obstacles (9.4 inches)

Off-road 2: Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 2.6 inches of height for 10.7 inches of ground clearance

Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 1.5 inches from NRH for easy ingress/egress. NRH and Park mode are driver selectable allowing the driver full control over vehicle ride height

Aero Mode: Lowers the vehicle .6 inches from NRH. Aero mode is controlled by vehicle speed and adjusts for optimal performance and fuel economy

Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.1 inches of lift span supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually with console controls.

In addition to the Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Selec-Terrain™ traction control system allows customers to choose the on- and off-road setting for optimum performance. This all-new feature electronically coordinates up to 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, Hill-start Assist and Hill-descent Control.

The new Selec-Terrain system offers five different driving conditions to achieve the best driving experience on all terrains:

Sand/Mud: Traction control and Quadra-Lift operate with sensitive response to wheel spin, and torque tuned for optimal performance

Sport: Provides enhanced on-road “fun-to-drive” capability

Auto: Automatically adapts to any on- or off-road situation

Snow: Vehicle traction adjusts for ultimate performance over snow-covered roads

Rock: Quadra-Lift air suspension system raises to maximum height of 10.7 inches, while the transfer case, differentials, and throttle coordinate to provide low-speed control

Selec-Terrain, coupled with the all-new Quadra-Lift air suspension system, offers drivers an adjustable suspension span that delivers world-class capability.

With the front air dam removed and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension system, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee features a 34.3-degree approach angle, a 29.3-degree departure angle and 23.1-degree breakover angle.

The all-new front and rear independent suspension features isolated front and rear suspension cradles along with variable-rate rear springs to deliver improved on-road handling and comfort while complementing the vehicle’s legendary off-road capability. The new rear suspension also allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle as opposed to underneath.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is also available with load-leveling shocks. Shocks react to payload levels and mechanically increase vehicle height when the vehicle has added rear payload. When payload is added to the vehicle, the shock’s gas pressure increases until the vehicle reaches normal ride height.

Advantages to load-leveling shocks include improved load handling and trailer-tow performance. Load-leveling shocks are available with trailer-tow packages (except V-6 4×2 models) that do not already have the Quadra-Lift air suspension system.

Premium Powertrains

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with two leading engine options for North American markets.

The all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is an all-new design, featuring double-overhead camshafts (DOHC) and a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block in a 60-degree configuration.

New 3.6 Liter V-6 engine for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Image: Jeep)

The all-new 3.6-liter V-6 engine delivers 290 horsepower (216 kW) at 6,400 rpm, 260 lb.-ft. (353 N•m) of torque at 4,800 rpm, an 11-percent improvement in fuel economy, and an increase of 38 percent in horsepower and 11 percent in torque.

The 3.6-liter V-6 engine design features a DOHC and high-flow intake and exhaust ports, which, in combination with dual-independent cam phasing, allow optimum volumetric and combustion efficiency over the full speed and load range. This results in an exceptional, flat torque curve along with high specific power. The engine torque exceeds 90 percent of the peak value from 1,600 to 6,400 rpm, which provides a smooth, responsive driving experience.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers trailer tow capability of up to 5,000 pounds on models equipped with the Pentastar V-6 engine.

The reduction of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) was a key objective for every component during the design phase of the engine and was achieved by utilizing advanced computer-aided engineering techniques. Structural, intake and exhaust areas of the engine are designed to deliver low levels of overall noise and achieve specific sound quality goals. The result is a refined engine in all applications. Idle quality refinement is improved due to use of the dual-independent cam phasing.

An environmental-friendly oil filter element and optional integrated oil cooler are used to aid service and enhance reliability. The use of long-life spark plugs and a high-energy, coil-on-plug ignition system also helps reduce cost of ownership.

In addition to the all-new V-6 engine, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is also available with the legendary 5.7-liter Multi-displacement System (MDS) V-8 engine. It delivers 360 horsepower (268 kW) and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (520 N•m) at 4,250 rpm and also features Variable-valve Timing (VVT), which delivers performance and towing capability, and fuel efficiency with the fuel-saving MDS.

The 5.7-liter engine’s fuel-saving MDS seamlessly alternates between smooth, efficient four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. This optimizes fuel economy when V-8 power is not required without sacrificing vehicle performance or capability.

The engine’s VVT improves fuel economy in two ways. First, it reduces the engine’s pumping work by closing the intake valve later. Second, it increases the expansion process of the combustion event. This allows more work to be transferred to the crankshaft instead of being rejected out of the exhaust port as heat. VVT improves engine breathing, which improves engine efficiency and power.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers trailer tow capability of up to 7,400 lbs. on 4×2 models when coupled with the 5.7-liter MDS V-8 engine.

For international markets, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available in left- and right-hand drive and offer a choice of diesel and petrol powertrains.

Transmissions

Available with the all-new 3.6-liter V-6 engine is the proven W5A580 five-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth shifts and optimum fuel economy. The five-speed W5A580 transmission includes Electronic Range Select (ERS) driver-interactive manual control and an electronically modulated torque converter clutch.

The 5.7-liter V-8 engine is mated to the 545RFE multi-speed automatic transmission. The five-speed transmission includes three planetary gear sets, one over-running clutch with ERS driver interactive control and an electronically controlled torque converter clutch.

Go Anywhere 4×4 Systems

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee features three 4×4 systems (Quadra-Trac I®, Quadra-Trac II® and Quadra-Drive® II).

Quadra-Trac I delivers full-time four-wheel drive without any switches or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation of the vehicle over a variety of road conditions. This light-weight, single-speed case is both proven and efficient for enhanced fuel economy.

The Quadra-Trac II’s two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and takes corrective action. The system also uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before tire slippage occurs. When wheel slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Drive II, with a rear Electronic Limited-slip Differential (ELSD), delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

Selec-Terrain is standard with Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II.

All 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with the Off-road Adventure I or the Off-road Adventure II Packages are Trail Rated. The Jeep Trail Rated badge on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee indicates that the vehicle is designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: Traction, Ground Clearance, Maneuverability, Articulation and Water Fording.

Jeep Trail Rated is a unique methodology used by Jeep Engineering to measure and predict off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Through a combination of natural and controlled field tests, Jeep Trail Rated provides a consistent measurement of off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Only Jeep vehicles are Trail Rated.

Body Structure

Continuing to build on the Jeep brand’s legendary off-road capability, the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee adds premium on-road performance to complete the package.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s premium SUV on-road manners and legendary Jeep ruggedness is achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone. The all-new body structure’s torsional stiffness is 146 percent stiffer than the previous Grand Cherokee and stiffer than the BMW X5 and Toyota Highlander for improved durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

More than 3,700 mm of arc welding and 100 m of structural adhesive augment welding. This marks a 53-percent increase in spot welds, a 42-percent increase in arc welds and a 38-percent increase in structural adhesive compared to the previous Grand Cherokee.

When the time came to redesign the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chrysler Group LLC’s design team jumped at an opportunity to reinvent, refine and re-establish the sport-utility vehicle (SUV) design that originally set the course for all other SUVs.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Image: Jeep)

In order to achieve these goals, it was imperative that the exterior not only reflect the vehicle’s off-road capability, but convey an attitude that would be compelling to existing owners and intriguing to potential customers. On the inside, the interior design team focused on ensuring superior quality, delivering exceptional fit and finish, providing attention to detail and raising the bar on customer comfort.

“The Jeep design team’s mission was to completely redesign the Jeep Grand Cherokee and redefine the meaning of Jeep luxury,” said Ralph Gilles, Senior Vice President — Product Design, Chrysler Group LLC. “New and existing customers will be delighted by the world-class attention to detail on both the exterior and interior. The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee confidently competes at every level of the full-size SUV segment, and in any market.”

Designers took the traditional design cues from the Jeep brand’s nearly 70-year heritage – the seven-slot grille, short front and rear overhangs, trapezoidal wheel arches – and moved them forward to create an all-new exterior design that will appeal to new and existing Jeep Grand Cherokee customers. On the inside, designers utilized upgraded materials and increased cargo and comfort space.

“Jeep is synonymous with the SUV,” said Mark Allen, Head of Jeep Design. “Our goal was to take that significant Jeep design history and move it forward, while listening to our customers’ input on what they love about the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The end result is proof that Jeep has retained and solidified its rightful spot as the leader, with a vehicle that does not sacrifice off-road capability for premium amenities.”

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee gains only two inches in length and three inches in width. As a result, customers will benefit with nearly 19 percent more room in the cargo area and more than four inches of increased rear-seat knee and leg room compared with the previous model.

Refined Aerodynamic Exterior Design

In order to achieve an efficient and aerodynamic appearance, designers spent a significant amount of time in Chrysler Group LLC’s wind tunnel in order to improve Jeep Grand Cherokee’s aerodynamic numbers by 8.5 percent, which also reduced wind noise and improved the vehicle’s fuel efficiency.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee sits higher and has a wider stance than its predecessor, which gives it a more stable and commanding presence on the road. The face of the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been simplified while preserving the traditional “Jeep shield” that contains the grille and headlamps. The more sculpted front end is shorter and gives the vehicle a solid, aggressive look. The streamlined design of the headlamps is contemporary and features quad-burner reflector parabolas. Fog lamps are standard on all models, and High-intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps with auto-leveling are standard on the Limited and Overland models.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Image: Jeep)

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Image: Jeep)

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (Image: Jeep)

The lower front fascia features optional tow hooks and a bright insert. The lower air dam, set deep for aerodynamic purposes, can be easily removed in order to increase the vehicle’s approach angle which is important for off-road purposes. Underneath the vehicle are individual aerodynamic belly pans that run the length of the vehicle.

The profile of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is sculpted and athletic. A distinct undercut sits below the A-line, adding character to the side of the vehicle. Side-window graphics are blacked-out giving the vehicle a simplified and integrated look. A three-dimensional stainless steel window trim is standard on all models. The Jeep Grand Cherokee features very short front and rear overhangs. Body-color mirrors and door handles are standard on Laredo models. Chromed roof rack side rails are standard on all models.

“The Jeep Design team purposely added premium exterior design cues to the Laredo model and it now shares its exterior features with the Limited model,” said Allen. “These subtle changes have a huge impact on the showroom floor.”

At the rear of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a liftgate with a flipper-glass window. The liftgate has a separate handle conveniently located, giving customers easier access when loading and unloading packages. The flipper glass is operated with a release button located below the liftgate handle and on the key fob. The lift-glass window allows easy access to the interior without having to open the liftgate – perfect for quick placement of groceries or adventure gear. A power liftgate, optional on the Limited and standard on the Overland, is a new feature. New to the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an integrated, body-color rear spoiler that contributes to the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency. Taillamps are now larger in size and extend into the liftgate, and feature four back up lights that improve nighttime visibility on the ParkView rear back-up camera. Chromed dual exhaust tips are paired with the 5.7-liter Multi-displacement System (MDS) V-8 engine.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available in three models: Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo (E and X), Limited and Overland.

Making its debut on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the all-new CommandView, a dual-pane sun roof that extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle, allowing for perfect views both on- and off-road. CommandView is comprised of two glass panels – one at the front and one at the rear. The front panel may be opened rearward providing additional light and fresh air to first-row passengers. The rear panel, which is fixed, allows light and open viewing for second-row passengers and comes standard with a sun shade for those who may not want direct sunlight. CommandView is optional on the Laredo and standard on Limited and Overland models. A more traditional sun roof is also an option on all models.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee features four new exterior colors — Blackberry Pearl Coat, Dark Charcoal Pearl Coat, Natural Green Pearl Coat and White Gold Metallic Clear Coat — along with Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Brilliant Black Crystal Clear Coat, Inferno Red Crystal Pearl Coat and Stone White Clear Coat.

Interior Designed for Comfort and Convenience

As the second major interior program to be produced from Chrysler’s Advance Interior Design Studio, the Jeep Grand Cherokee interior design team paid close attention to every detail, focusing on quality, fit and finish and interior comfort.

“Every interior element was placed under the microscope on the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee,” said Klaus Busse, Head of Interior Design and Component Commonization. “When customers touch any part of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee interior, they will experience softer and more premium materials and smooth surfaces that are pleasing to the touch.”

Ford Expedition and Expedition EL blend bold Ford Truck design, functionality and toughness with interior refinement, giving customers the flexibility only a full-size Ford SUV can provide. For the 2011 model year, the Expedition lineup offers newly available interior technology to help occupants stay connected and entertained.

2011 Ford Expedition: The Ford Expedition and Expedition EL blend bold Ford Truck design, functionality and toughness with interior refinement, giving customers the flexibility only a full-size Ford SUV can provide. (Image: Ford)

Long journeys, already made easier by the spacious, comfortable accommodations found within Expedition, are aided by a new available headrest-mounted rear DVD system. With two individual screens and two sets of wireless headphones, the system allows rear seat passengers to enjoy individual A/V options without disturbing front seat passengers or each other.

2011 Ford Expedition: No surprise in interior design (Image: Ford)

For safety on journeys of any length, Expedition is aided by Ford-exclusive AdvanceTrac with RSC, including standard Trailer Sway Control. Trailer Sway Control works in conjunction with AdvanceTrac with RSC to detect trailer sway through the motions of the vehicle and take measures – such as applying precise braking and reducing engine torque – to bring both vehicle and trailer under control.

AdvanceTrac with RSC delivers a level of performance that competitive stability control systems can’t match. Unlike competitor systems, AdvanceTrac with RSC uses a second gyroscopic roll-rate sensor to determine the vehicle’s body roll angle and roll rate.

If the unique roll-rate sensor detects a significant roll angle, the system applies additional countermeasures – such as applying brakes to one or more wheels or reducing engine power – to enhance vehicle rollover resistance.

In the event of an accident, Expedition is equipped with the SOS Post-Crash Alert System, where the horn and emergency flashers are activated should airbags deploy. Other safety features include Safety Canopy side-curtain airbags, a rollover detection system and dual-stage front airbags that deploy with varying power based on crash severity, the driver’s seat position and seat belt usage. Front seat side airbags provide extra protection in the event of a side impact.

The 2000 Expedition was the first full-size SUV to earn five-star front safety NCAP ratings for the driver and passenger from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a recognition it has maintained every year since 2000. This 10-year run on five-star ratings sets Expedition apart as best in its class. The Expedition is designed to meet all known future government crash standards.

More choices, more convenience

Expedition provides customers with the convenience and luxury options full-size SUV buyers demand. The 2011 Expedition is available in XL, XLT, Limited and King Ranch series; an EL version of each is also available.

A wealth of standard convenience options gives Expedition a luxurious feel. The Easy Fuel Capless Fuel-Filler System eliminates the inconvenience of forgetting to put the gas cap back on after fueling, and can also help prevent evaporative emissions from escaping. Standard center console, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel and six-speaker audio system with CD and MP3 capability are also found on Expedition.

Expedition features Ford’s MyKey system. Parents simply program the key through the vehicle message center to incorporate restrictions such as:

Persistent Belt-Minder chime

Limited top speed of 80 mph

Traction control system that limits tire spin cannot be deactivated

Audio system volume limited to 44 percent of maximum volume

A speed alert chime at 45, 55 or 65 mph

Technology also helps keep Expedition customers connected. SIRIUS satellite radio capability and SYNC, the industry-first, voice-activated hands-free communications and entertainment system, are both standard features on XLT, Limited and King Ranch trim levels.

SYNC with Traffic, Directions & Information leverages industry-leading voice-recognition software, integrated GPS technology and a customer’s Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone. SYNC’s new applications provide simple hands-free access to personalized traffic reports, precise turn-by-turn driving directions, and up-to-date information including business listings, news, sports and weather.

Also available is a voice-activated navigation system with SIRIUS Travel Link that lets customers access up-to-the-minute information and entertainment content through the vehicle’s navigation system. The information includes current gas prices from an estimated 120,000 filling stations, up-to-the-minute traffic information for 78 markets, weather conditions, sports scores and movie listings in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia.

Music lovers will enjoy the addition of HD Radio technology, included with the voice-activated navigation system. HD Radio enables more listening options and digital sound quality. No additional equipment or cost is involved. To use HD Radio, listeners simply tune in their favorite station. If the station is broadcasting with HD Radio technology, the system automatically picks up the signal and will transition to digital audio once decoded.

A Ford truck at heart

Expedition is powered by a tough truck-proven 5.4-liter flex fuel V-8 engine. Flex fuel gives consumers more options at the pump, allowing refueling with E85 ethanol fuel blends.

With three valves per cylinder and variable camshaft timing, the 5.4-liter engine delivers a satisfying balance of refinement and muscle. Rated at 310 horsepower and 365 ft.-lb. of torque, Expedition can tow up to 9,200 pounds, for the best tow rating in its class.

With a wider gear ratio, Expedition’s six-speed transmission has smaller steps between gears than a typical four-speed automatic and offers improved shift quality, faster acceleration and improved fuel economy.

Expedition safety technologies

Standard and available 2011 Ford Expedition safety features include:

AdvanceTrac traction control with RSC (Roll Stability Control) and Trailer Sway Control

Ford scrutinized every inch of the new 2011 Ford Explorer throughout the development – even when the design existed only on a computer screen – to ensure the vehicle delivered top-notch craftsmanship.

When designers at Ford’s product development center sat down to sketch out the new 2011 Explorer, the team had a clear objective: Deliver a sleek, modern package, while maintaining the rugged looks of an SUV. But no matter what direction they took the new design, there was one thing that could not be compromised: craftsmanship.

“Every detail of the new Explorer was scrutinized,” said Peter Bejin, Ford craftsmanship supervisor. “Craftsmanship – the look, the style, the feel of a well-built vehicle – is a critical step in the design process. It is the key differentiator in a competitive and crowded marketplace.”

It’s so important that Ford formed a dedicated group of product designers and engineers to focus solely on craftsmanship. The Global Craftsmanship team, based both in Europe and the U.S., worked to ensure that every part, seam, button and dial is perfectly matched so that the vehicle is well crafted, aesthetically pleasing and functional.

The new Explorer’s craftsmanship invites its customers to perceive the vehicle with their senses. A consistent and harmonious combination of visual, audible and olfactory characteristics must exceed customers’ expectations.

“It’s like an orchestra, where many instruments make up the harmonious whole, the precise and pleasant sensory elements in a Ford vehicle work together to create a holistic balance,” said Bejin. “This was our mission statement as we developed the new Explorer.”

The craftsmanship process begins very early in the vehicle’s development. Designers start upstream by looking at all their data in the virtual world on a computer screen long before the vehicle is seen in its full form as a prototype.

Closing the gap

When the vehicle body is first built in a prototype phase, quality tests begin. On the Explorer, engineers used a highly accurate laser wand to check the placement and measurement of more than 500 connection points on the vehicle body to make sure the full physical design of the body matched the virtual computer version.

“In the prototype phase, we examine and scrutinize every touch point on the vehicle that our engineers have deemed important to quality,” said Matt Machala, tooling/dimensional control engineer. “This is so we can trace any quality issues before the vehicle leaves the body shop.”

Machala and his crew also measure the pressure and sealings on the vehicle doors, making sure they open and shut firmly and correctly. They measure the margin of fit of the body panels, assuring that the seams and gaps where parts come together are no wider than 3.7 millimeters or about the width of two stacked nickels, Machala said.

“That’s the kind of thing that customers really notice,” Machala explained. “It’s not just about aesthetics; they want a vehicle that’s put together well.”

No air leaks means a quiet ride

A key aspect of perceived quality is sound, or the absence of sound. A noisy interior cabin caused by wind or other external disturbances upset the sense of sound. Ford has gone to great lengths to minimize wind noise by using high-tech devices that can pinpoint noise from wind and other sources entering the vehicle.

One unsung hero in this process is an air leakage test performed at different stages throughout the production of the new Explorer. Eliminating air leaks begins with virtual design checks on the computer and then continues with validation tests after the body has been built.

To test for air leaks, engineers must first remove air from the vehicle’s interior cabin. A test vehicle is randomly selected and pulled from the assembly line after it’s been through the paint process, but before its trim parts are added. All of the openings to the interior cabin of the vehicle are sealed with sheets of Plexiglas that match the shape of the opening to create an airtight seal. A vacuum-like machine with hose attached is secured to a hole in the Plexiglas through which air is either suctioned from or pumped in to the cabin, depending on the test.

Engineers then crawl through the cabin using a stethoscope type listening device to check for air coming in or out of the vehicle’s cabin. They also use a mini-camera on a cord that enables them to look into spaces otherwise inaccessible. This process is repeated once more once the vehicle is fully assembled.

“Reducing air leaks helps us deliver that quiet ride that today’s customers expect and deserve,” said Jason Griffin, air leakage noise, vibration and harshness engineer. “So we use our ears and our tools, and we look and we listen to make sure we have a tightly sealed passenger cabin.”

Taking the process a step further, the team even has developed an innovative new weapon in its arsenal against air leakage –thermal camera photography teamed with heated air, which pinpoints the exact location the air leak is occurring.

“Typically, we would pump air into or evacuate air out of the vehicle, and then listen for air coming in or out, and that’s how we detect the issues,” Griffin said. “But recently we devised a method where we can heat the air, so when we blow air out of the cabin with our vacuum, a hot spot appears on the camera pointing to the leak in the sheet metal.”

Engineers also perform air leakage tests on vehicles in their finished state with all the interior, exterior, chassis and powertrain components installed to further ensure a quiet ride for customers.

Perfect parts, perfect body

The craftsmanship checks continue as Explorer moves forward in its development process. At Chicago Assembly Plant, where Explorer soon will roll off the assembly lines, operators and product engineers work together with suppliers to conduct a test known as the trim coordination build.

To ensure that all of the new Explorer’s trim parts from suppliers match Ford’s specifications, engineers use a dimensionally-correct aluminum version of the vehicle, called an environmental cube or “e-cube,” to attach all of the trim parts onto like a puzzle. Inside and out, each individual part that makes up the style, shape and look of the new Explorer is attached to the e-cube such as the grille front, bumper fascias, instrument panel and other parts are hung onto the test sheet metal to make sure each fits perfectly.

“What we’re doing is making sure that all of our trim parts fit correctly early in the process,” Bejin said. “So you have your fascia, your scuff plates, your headliner, your seats, your carpet – everything. You can build the whole thing out like a life-sized puzzle. We’re making sure that each part is what it needs to be dimensionally on a mock model before it’s considered a good part for assembly on the real product.”

That means it fits well – to within a razor-thin 1/10th of a millimeter of the computer design – ensuring tight-fitting trim parts with no unsightly gaps.

The latest version of the classic Mercedes-Benz G-Class off-roader, now in its 31st year, features state-of-the-art BlueTEC technology. BlueTEC is a Mercedes-Benz-developed technology designed to reduce diesel vehicle emissions, especially nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The BlueTEC version of the G-Class uses AdBlue®, an aqueous urea solution which is injected into the exhaust-gas stream. This process releases ammonia, which converts up to 80 percent of the nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water by a process of reduction in the downstream SCR catalytic converter. Since the G-Class is often used in remote areas of the world – one of its main purposes – the engineers have simplified matters by integrating the AdBlue® filler cap in the vehicle’s outside tank recess. One full tank of AdBlue® is good for around 12,000 kilometres.

G 350 BlueTEC with AdBlue® filler cap in the vehicle's outside tank recess (Image: Daimler)

The V6 diesel engine in the G 350 BlueTEC develops 155 kW (210 hp) at 3400 rpm and has a torque of 540 Nm between 1600 and 2400 rpm. This model therefore produces substantially fewer emissions than the previous G 350 CDI model – undercutting the limits of the EU5 standard and, in particular, reducing NOx emissions by around 50 % – yet still delivers comparable performance.

A full range: the current G-Class

The “G” family currently has three body variants – short-wheelbase Station Wagon, long-wheelbase Station Wagon and Convertible – which can be combined with either the new BlueTEC engine, as described, or a powerful 5.5‑litre V8 petrol engine developing 285 kW (388 hp) with a torque of 530 Nm. The flagship G 55 AMG model – available only as a four-door, long-wheelbase Station Wagon – is powered by a V8 supercharged engine developing 373 kW (507 hp) with an impressive peak torque of 700 Nm.
The evergreen Mercedes-Benz off-roader continues to offer a superior synthesis of high-performance drive and dynamic handling control systems. The standard specification includes the electronically controlled traction system 4ETS, the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and three differential locks selectable at the push of a button, alongside the permanent all-wheel drive with off-road ratio and the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission.

In its 31th year the G-Class gets an Line-Extension (Image: Daimler)

A series of awards: the G-Class in readers’ polls

The stalwart of the off-road scene continues to enjoy success after success, as underlined by the latest readers’ polls. In the readers’ poll for “Off-roader of the Year 2010″ held by the motoring magazine “Off Road”, the legendary G-Class notched up a double success: it won first place in the “Luxury off-roader” category, while the special EDITION.PUR model, which entered production in 2009 to mark the 30th anniversary of the G-Class, took second place in the “Classic” category.

These latest public awards make the G-Class one of the most popular and highly acclaimed models in the world of off-road vehicles, as a look at the other major awards received in recent years reveals. For the seventh time, the readers of “Off Road” have awarded the title of “Off-roader of the Year” to the G-Class, following its successes in 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In its 2007 and 2009 readers’ polls, the off-road magazine “4Wheel Fun” declared the “G” to be a “Superstar”. Following its successes in 2003 and 2007, the readers of “Motor Klassik” once again voted the Mercedes-Benz G-Class the “Classic of the Future” last year. And no less than 14 times, readers of the motoring magazine “auto motor und sport” have chosen the G-Class as the world’s best off-road vehicle.

Ford Super Duty customers expect and demand capability from the best-selling heavy-duty truck in America. For most Super Duty owners, it’s the core asset of their business. Day after day, year after year, it’s expected to deliver results in the most demanding situations. No nonsense. And never any excuses.

“Our Super Duty customers do some of America’s toughest jobs,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas. “Every day they’re out there working with little fanfare and all they ask is the right tool for the job. The new 2011 Super Duty offers them a truck with best-in-class towing and payload, all-new powertrains and even more capability than ever to help them do their jobs.”

Ford’s F-Series has been the best-selling line of trucks in the U.S. for 33 straight years. With class-leading torque, horsepower, fuel economy and towing and payload capability, the new Super Duty further underscores Ford’s Built Ford Tough legacy.

“The 2011 Super Duty offers the widest array of solutions for the widest array of heavy-duty work truck customers,” said Chris Brewer, chief engineer. “The Super Duty lineup offers a variety of bodystyles and powertrains, from diesel and gasoline engines, each with a new six-speed transmission, to pickup trucks and chassis cabs, each with the towing and payload capabilities that define Super Duty.”

2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty: The 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty not only has the most towing capability, it features a wide array of technologies and conveniences such as Trailer Sway Control to help you tow more confidently. (Image: Ford)

New diesel and gasoline engines deliver improved torque, horsepower, fuel economy

For 2011, Super Duty features both all-new diesel and gasoline engines that are mated to a new transmission. The new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel was designed, engineered and built by a Ford team dedicated solely to delivering this class-leading diesel to the next-generation Super Duty to enable continued best-in-class towing and payload.

The result: The new Power Stroke pumps out a best-in-class 735 ft.-lb. of torque at 1,600 rpm and 390 horsepower at 2,800 rpm, enabling the 2011 Super Duty’s class-leading towing capability of 24,400 pounds. The 2011 Super Duty also has class-leading payload capability at 6,520 pounds.

Benefits of the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel engine:

First use of a compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine block in a Super Duty-class vehicle in North America; CGI is stronger than cast iron, and Ford successfully has used the material in engine blocks in products around the world. The block structure was optimized for reduced weight and maximum strength to meet the demands of higher torque and more horsepower, and enable class-leading fuel economy.

Unique inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture, an automotive-industry first for a modern production diesel, reduces overall exhaust system volume, which leads to better throttle response; a reduced exhaust system surface area minimizes heat transfer to the engine compartment and improves NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

The turbocharger features an industry-first dual-sided compressor wheel that works in a single housing. The unit is uniquely center-mounted on a pedestal low in the back of the valley for improved NVH. The design allows the single unit to deliver the advantages of a twin-turbocharger system in a smaller, more efficient package, combining the benefits of a small turbocharger (faster response) and a large turbocharger (ability to compress and force more air into the engine for more power) in one unit.

The high-pressure fuel system injects fuel at more than 29,000 psi. The system delivers up to five injection events per cylinder per cycle using eight-hole piezo injectors to spray fuel into the piston bowl. The direct-injection system is calibrated and phased for optimum power, fuel efficiency and NVH.

Aluminum cylinder heads for reduced weight; the mid-deck construction with dual water jackets provides increased strength and optimal cooling; six-head bolts, instead of four as found on other engines, help improve sealing and maintain cylinder integrity even with the higher firing pressures.

Compatible up to B20 fuel, allowing greener fueling options of up to 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.

“Developing the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel engine was an awesome endeavor,” said Adam Gryglak, lead 6.7-liter diesel engineering manager. “The extensive engineering and testing made us confident this engine ensures the new Super Duty’s leadership in capability, reliability and productivity.”

The engine and aftertreatment system for the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V-8 turbocharged diesel powertrain ably meets the new, more stringent 2010 federal emissions requirements for nitrogen oxides (NOx), which have to be lowered by approximately 80 percent, making this the cleanest Super Duty diesel ever.

New gasoline engine delivers class-leading power and fuel economy as well

Ford tapped into a bit of its proud racing heritage to create the new 6.2-liter V-8 gasoline engine, which uses big-bore architecture to produce best-in-class torque, horsepower and fuel economy. The new gasoline engine delivers 405 ft.-lb. of torque (at 4,500 rpm) and 385 horsepower (at 5,500 rpm) on regular gasoline. The new V-8 also is E85 compatible.

These numbers represent an increase of 40 ft.-lb. of torque and 85 horsepower over the outgoing 5.4-liter V-8. The V-8’s large bore (102 millimeters) allows for larger intake and exhaust valves for improved engine breathing, and the short stroke (95 millimeters) allows higher engine speed for increased horsepower.

Benefits of the new 6.2-liter V-8 gasoline engine include:

SOHC valvetrain with roller-rocker shafts: The single overhead camshaft (SOHC) per cylinder head design results in a stiff valvetrain that allows optimized camshaft lift profiles and results in great low-speed torque. The roller-rocker shafts allow valve angles to be splayed, resulting in optimized intake and exhaust port layout for better breathing.

Dual-equal variable cam timing: Intake and exhaust valve opening and closing events are phased at the same time to optimize fuel economy and performance throughout the engine speed range and throttle positions.

TwoSOHC valvetrain per cylinder: Due to the large bore size, two spark plugs per cylinder are used to more efficiently burn the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber, enabling better fuel economy and increased engine torque. The twin plugs also help the engine maintain a smooth, stable idle.

Dual knock sensors: A knock sensor on each bank of cylinders of the V-8 engine allows the spark timing of each cylinder to be individually optimized real-time, throughout the engine speed range. The engine learns the optimum timing via an adaptive algorithm.

Better engine crankcase “breathing” and efficiency: Significant development work and computer-aided engineering optimized the cylinder block for more efficient airflow in the crankcase as the pistons move up and down in the bores, resulting in improved torque at higher engine speeds. Piston-cooling jets squirt oil on the underside of the pistons to keep the piston crowns cool under extreme operating conditions. The cooling jets also allow for a higher compression ratio for better engine efficiency and faster engine oil warm-up on cold starts, also improving fuel economy.

New TorqShift transmission harnesses and manages the power; Live Drive PTO available

The all-new 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission was designed to manage the high low-end torque produced by the new diesel engine. The same basic transmission also is mated to the new gasoline engine, giving customers of either engine the ability to efficiently get the increased torque and horsepower to the ground. Engineered for greater efficiency and fuel economy, improvements include refined architecture to provide relatively low clutch speeds, which results in lower drag losses, and optimized fluid levels and drainback to reduce churning of fluid while also providing superior lubrication.

In addition to hardware-based improvements, the new transmission features enhanced Tow Haul mode with integrated engine exhaust braking and SelectShift Automatic capability, which includes Progressive Range Select and a manual mode, allowing customers to select the gear to suit their needs.

The new TorqShift transmission also enables the first application of Live Drive PTO (Power Take Off) in a Super Duty-class vehicle. On 2011 Super Duty diesels with the PTO prep option, the PTO output gear is linked through the torque converter to the engine crankshaft. This allows the transmission to power auxiliary equipment such as snowplows, aerial lifts, tow truck lifts, cement mixers or dump trucks. The power is available any time the engine is running.

Pioneered on agricultural applications, the Live Drive feature is particularly useful when mobile PTO function is required during start-stop operations, such as salt spreading or snow plowing. “A fully functional Live Drive mobile PTO will allow Super Duty customers to take full advantage of the equipment on their trucks,” said Al Bruck, 6R140 transmission engineering manager.

Best-in-class towing and payload; new towing options

Putting all that power to work is what defines Super Duty. The 2011 Super Duty builds on its best-in-class towing and payload capability and also offers more towing options from inside the bed. New is the first-ever factory-installed and warranted fifth wheel and gooseneck substructure directly attached to the frame.

“Our system is factory-installed and comes with a limited warranty from Ford. The electrical connection is mounted in the side of the bed wall, providing a clean installation,” said Peter Frantzeskakis, vehicle engineering manager.

Particularly noteworthy are productivity enhancements to the F-450 pickup to benefit the heaviest-duty trailer tow customers. Unneeded weight was shed, helping to improve fuel economy and top speed. Even with these changes, the F-450 Super Duty pickup maintains its class-leading gross combined weight rating of 33,000 pounds.

Addition of Trailer Sway Control leads safety enhancements

Ford’s lauded Trailer Sway Control (TSC) system joins the Super Duty lineup, giving those customers segment-first capability. TSC is integrated with AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control™, which now is standard on all single rear wheel (SRW) configurations.

The AdvanceTrac control module uses additional software to monitor the truck’s motion when a trailer is attached. TSC can determine from the yaw motion of the truck if the trailer is swaying and take measures – such as applying precise braking or reducing engine torque – to help reduce the trailer sway.

For further peace of mind, the available integrated trailer brake controller, factory-installed and covered by a Ford limited warranty, offers smoother and safer operation due to its ability to interface with multiple vehicle systems.

Normal braking is proportional to driver brake pressure for smooth brake stops at all speeds. If the vehicle’s Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) is engaged, the special trailer brake kicks in to minimize the potential for trailer wheel lockup. In Super Duty trucks with Trailer Brake Control towing trailers with electric brakes, the Ford system can, during a sway event, also apply brakes to the trailer to help stabilize it.

Other enhanced towing, off-road control features and safety improvements include:

Hill Start Assist, which applies brakes to prevent rollback

Hill Descent Control, which uses the accelerator and brake to set, and then hold, the speed

Electronic Locking Differential, which provides maximum traction by forcing the rear wheels to turn at the same speed

Standard tire pressure monitoring system on all SRW models

Optional side air bags and air curtains

A new available 4.2-inch LCD screen includes information on specific features such as Trailer Brake Control and Tow Haul

Improved ride, handling and steering for a more comfortable experience

In addition to increased towing and payload capability and improved fuel mileage enabled by the new powertrains, customers of the next Super Duty also will benefit from improved ride, handling and steering. For 2011, the engineering team optimized the frame and suspension of the current Super Duty, particularly the leaf springs and spring rate, as well as adjusting the internal valving in all the shock absorbers to enable greater towing and payload capability with further ride refinement.

The steering gear also is new. The 4×2 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty feature modified steering system geometry to take better advantage of the twin I-beam suspension, which combines the performance of an independent suspension with the durability of a beam axle suspension. Improved response, precision and better on-center steering and control come from making the steering gear symmetric left to right.

The result is greater customer comfort, confidence and control in all situations.

“A big part of the comfort in Super Duty trucks comes through controllability,” said Dan Gompper, vehicle dynamics supervisor. “No matter if the truck is loaded or unloaded, full trailer or empty trailer, customers can be fully confident.”

Bold exterior; new flow-through console highlights interior

The new hood of the 2011 Super Duty, with its prominent inverted power dome, complements the new diesel and gasoline engines lurking beneath. “Super Duty” is stamped on the upper grille, with a larger Ford oval proudly gracing the front.

Inside, customers will benefit from a new reconfigurable flow-through console that improves the functionality of the truck. Storage space is increased about 60 percent, and at least 70 different configurations are possible. A 12-volt powerpoint is available at the rear of the console and another is located inside the main bin, which is lockable. A 110-volt power inverter is standard with all console configurations.

Improved productivity through Ford Work Solutions

For many customers, the Super Duty cab also serves as a mobile office. Industry-exclusive Ford Work Solutions™ is part of available technology to help customers stay connected with their business from the job site and track tools.

A new available 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen allows customers to take full advantage of the 2011 Super Duty’s capabilities; an off-road message center has been added as well. The five-way button on the steering wheel allows customers to navigate through various menu options – several relating to fuel economy and towing convenience – never before available on a Super Duty truck.

Continuing the legacy of quality

With all-new powertrains enabling greater towing and payload capability, safety enhancements such as Trailer Sway Control added, and greater functionality with available Ford Work Solutions, the new 2011 Ford Super Duty is poised to continue its legacy as America’s premier work truck.

The accolades the current Super Duty has received, based on 2009 model year GQRS (Global Quality Research System) data, include:

Best-in-Class TGW (Things Gone Wrong) for All Pickup Truck Segments

Best-in-Class Customer Satisfaction among Heavy Duty Pickups

“With all-new powertrains and increased capability, the 2011 Super Duty improves on its proud heritage as the ultimate work truck,” said Brewer.

The absolute highlight of this new generation is the world debut of the Cayenne S Hybrid with its technically highly sophisticated parallel full hybrid drive and fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle of just 8.2 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 34.4 mpg imp), which means CO2 emissions of just 193 g/km. The Cayenne S Hybrid therefore combines the performance of an eight-cylinder with the economy of a six-cylinder running on much less fuel.

The New Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid (Image: Porsche)

The New Porsche Cayenne (Image: Porsche)

Led by the Cayenne S Hybrid, all models in the new generation are trendsetters in efficiency and performance in their respective segments. Compared with the former models, fuel consumption is down by up to 23 per cent, since the new Cayenne, like every Porsche, has been developed according to the principle of “Porsche Intelligent Performance”: more power on less fuel, greater efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.

These objectives result, not least, from the introduction of the new Tiptronic S eight-speed automatic transmission with Auto Start Stop and a wide spread of gear ratios, thermal management on the engine and transmission cooling circuit, on-board network recuperation, variable engine cut-off and intelligent lightweight construction.

Thanks to its special combination of materials for optimum weight as well as changes in the overall concept of the vehicle such as the Cayenne’s new active and extra-light all-wheel drive, weight is down for example on the Cayenne S by 180 kilos or 400 lb – despite the improvement of product substance and an even higher standard of safety. This clearly has very positive effects not just on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, but also on performance, agility and handling.

Benefiting from these features and new technologies, the new Cayenne offers even more driving pleasure both onroad and offroad, combined with even greater everyday driving qualities, enhanced comfort and supreme elegance. The completely new, sporting and elegant design of the new model integrates the 2010 Cayenne even more closely into the overall range of Porsche cars. The sports car-like character of the Cayenne comes out even more from all angles, just as the highlights in the shape and design of the car so typical of Porsche are also clearer than ever before.

Extra space inside and greater variability is ensured by the wheelbase now 40 mm or almost 1.6” longer. In all, the new Cayenne is 48 mm or 1.9” longer than its predecessor. But despite its larger exterior dimensions, the new generation of the Cayenne is nevertheless far more compact and dynamic. The most significant eye-catcher within the brand-new, high-quality interior is the centre console rising up to the front with its upright selector or gearshift lever, giving the interior the typical character of a cockpit upfront. The rear-seat bench moves fore-and-aft by 160 millimetres or 6.3”, with the backrest angle adjusting to three different settings.

New designed Cockpit of the 2010 Porsche cayenne (Image: Porsche)

Sales of the Cayenne in Europe are starting on 8 May, with Porsche offering the right model from the start for every customer: The range starts with the 3.6-litre V6 Cayenne. Despite the increase in engine power to 300 bhp, fuel consumption in the NEDC driving cycle in conjunction with optional eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission is down from the former model by no less than 20 per cent to 9.9 ltr/100 km, equal to 28.5 mpg imp.

The Cayenne Diesel with its 240 bhp (176 kW), 550 Newton-metre (405 lb-ft) three-litre V6 likewise reduces fuel consumption by 20 per cent, down from 9.3 to 7.4 ltr/100 km (equal to 30.4 mpg imp now improving to 38.2 mpg imp).

Fuel consumption is also down significantly on the high-torque Cayenne S with its 4.8-litre V8 power unit, in this case by 23 per cent to 10.5 litres/100 kilometres (equal to 26.9 mpg imp). At the same time the new engine delivers 400 bhp maximum output instead of the former 385 bhp, offering significantly better performance, just like all models in the new generation of the Cayenne.

This also applies to the Cayenne Turbo, with its 500 bhp (368 kW) 4.8-litre V8 biturbo consuming just 11.5 ltr/100 km (equal to 24.6 mpg imp) in the New European Driving Cycle, again 23 per cent less than its predecessor (14.9 ltr/100 km or 19.0 mpg imp).

Together with the Cayenne S Hybrid, no less than three of the five versions of the Cayenne thus consume less than ten litres of fuel per 100 km in the New European Driving Cycle, with two models emitting less than 200 grams of CO2 per kilometre. At 193 g/km, the Cayenne S Hybrid is not only the cleanest version of the Cayenne with the lowest level of emissions, but also the cleanest Porsche throughout the Company’s entire portfolio.

In the intelligent interaction of the three-litre supercharged V6 and the electric motor, the Cayenne S Hybrid focuses on maximum efficiency from the overall system. Depending on driving conditions, the vehicle reaches this target with either only one drive unit operating by itself or with both drive units working together. In this context the 34 kW (47 hp) electric motor is of course the ideal partner for the 333 hp compressor engine with its high torque at low speeds. Together, the two drive units deliver maximum system output of 380 bhp and peak torque of 580 Nm/427 lb-ft at just 1,000 rpm, with the same kind of performance as the Cayenne S with its V8 power unit.

The two drive units are connected to one another by a separator clutch masterminded by the Hybrid Manager. Indeed, this separator clutch is essential to run the Cayenne S Hybrid either on its electric motor or combustion engine alone, or with both drive units operating together. Given a reserved, moderate style of motoring, for example in a residential area, this allows the driver to cover short distances on electric power alone and therefore absolutely free of emissions and with hardly any noise, driving at a speed of up to 60 km/h or almost 40 mph.

To ensure fast acceleration when setting off, the electric motor may however serve to provide additional thrust through its boosting effect. Intelligent management of the separator clutch makes the transition among the hybrid-specific driving modes most inconspicuous, comfortable and quick for the driver. At the same time the combustion engine may be completely switched off at speeds of up to 156 km/h or 97 mph, being fully disengaged from the drivetrain when no further power is required. In this so-called sailing mode, cruising along without power, the drag forces exerted by the combustion engine and their braking effect are eliminated in the interest of lower drive resistance and fuel consumption.

This Touareg is reinterpreting the fascinating multipurpose SUV idea in a contemporary way – thanks to a range of engines that are nearly 20 percent more fuel efficient and a large variety of new assistance and safety systems.

The Touareg will also be the first and only off-roader in Europe by a German car maker to be available in a hybrid version too. It sets standards among fully off-road capable SUVs with petrol engines that have a fuel consumption value of just 8.2 litres fuel per 100 kilometres. The Touareg Hybrid can be driven up to 50 km/h in purely electric mode – emissions-free. Among the diesel engines, the Touareg V6 TDI with 7.4 litre combined fuel consumption now posts the best value in the segment of genuine SUVs. Both versions, the Touareg Hybrid and V6 TDI, are the most fuel efficient petrol and diesel SUVs ever built in Europe in this large vehicle class.

New era SUV – lighter, more aerodynamic and fuel efficient

As has already been accomplished on the globally successful, smaller Tiguan, Volkswagen is systematically striving for sustainability on the new Touareg too. The first precondition was met: The SUV was lightened by 208 kilograms in the base version! A quantum leap. Yet, the body has five percent greater torsional rigidity, which makes it the leader in its competitive class. A second precondition was met as well: Designers attained a significantly improved Cd value. Along with aerodynamic refinement efforts, another factor at work here is that this Touareg is built lower to the ground than the previous model. Together with front end styling based on the new Volkswagen design DNA, this results in a smaller frontal area. The third precondition: All engines, now offered with a standard 8-speed automatic transmission – a first in this market segment – demonstrate significant fuel economy advantages over the previous model; in some cases the advantage is far greater than two litres per 100 kilometres.

SUV for all trails – All-wheel drive in two versions

Also modified in pursuit of reduced fuel consumption was the standard all-wheel drive. In the base version (“4Motion”), all new generation Touaregs have all-wheel drive with Torsen limited-slip differential (4MOTION; climbing ability: 31 degrees). Like the Tiguan Track & Field, the Touareg also has an “Off-road driving programme”, which – at the press of a button – tunes the ABS, EDS and ASR for off-road duty, activates Hill Descent Assist and adjusts the automatic gearshift points.

Instead of a Torsen differential, the V6 TDI can be ordered with an optional “Terrain Tech Packet” that has an even more rugged transfer case designed for off-road duty. It includes reduction gearing and centre and rear differentials, each with up to 100 percent locking (4XMOTION; climbing ability: 45 degrees). Similar to the first Touareg generation, this version also has a rotary switch the driver now uses to adapt the car to specific duty conditions over five levels: 1. “On-Road”; 2. “Off-Road” (like “Off-road driving programme” plus automatic control of the mechanical locks); 3. Low (like “Off-road” plus activation of reduced gearing, higher shift points, no automatic upshift in manual mode); 4. Addition of centre differential lock; 5. Addition of rear differential lock. Equipped like this, the Touareg can conquer any terrain on Earth.

SUV for everyday driving – more space, more innovations

Volkswagen has not only made the new Touareg lighter, more fuel efficient and an agile performer; it has also made it into an even more versatile, all-round vehicle. The new interior was made more functional, the seats more comfortable and leg room in the rear is larger. Now the rear bench seat has 160 millimetres in longitudinal adjustment, and the backrest angle can be adjusted. Electrically unlatched at the press of a button as an option, it folds down in seconds and frees up 1,642 litres of cargo space. Already standard equipment in the base version is a radio-CD and info system, which is intuitively controlled over a 6.5-inch touch-screen.

Nice working-space in the new Volkswagen Touareg (Image: Volkswagen)

The parking brake is now activated by pushbutton. The engine (V6 versions) automatically shuts off at traffic lights and restarts as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal (Stop-Start system). As an option, the tailgate can be opened and closed by a RF remote control unit integrated in the car key. The largest panoramic sunroof of all SUVs provides for light even on overcast days. The innovative “Area View” utilises four cameras to detect the Touareg’s surroundings and this enhances safety. Also offering protection are up to nine airbags. Lane Assist ensures that the vehicle does not stray from the right path; meanwhile, Side Assist warns of vehicles approaching from the rear when changing lanes. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with integrated Front Assist can brake to a stop in an emergency and tension the seatbelts as a precautionary measure. Bi-Xenon headlights with Dynamic Light Assist perceive oncoming traffic and adjust the light beam to eliminate unwanted glare, and adaptive roll compensation ensures that the Touareg sits solidly on the street. For the first time, there will be special features on the new Touareg under the new “Exclusive” badge from Volkswagen Individual. Options that can be ordered include 19-inch alloy wheels (“Girona” type), fine wood inserts (“Olive Ash”) and a leather interior (“Nappa”) in the two-colour combinations “Dark Burgundy / Titan Black” or “Pepper Beige / Titan Black”.

Touareg – the best of two worlds

About 500,000 car drivers chose to buy the first generation of the SUV. It is a luxury sport utility vehicle that offers a high level of comfort, sporty driving properties, avant-garde styling, excellent quality and unlimited expedition capabilities – essentially the best of the passenger car and off-road worlds unified in one concept. This is now being followed up by the new Touareg – a high-end and versatile all-round vehicle that brings these two worlds together even more perfectly. The Touareg will already be available at dealers in April.

The OFF ROAD Obelisk award was presented during a special gala evening held at Munich’s “Das Schloss” theatre tent. Over 48,000 votes were cast to select the winners among the 97 vehicles nominated by the organisers. The Unimog was the top-scoring model among the special-purpose vehicles with an outstanding 37.9 % of the readers’ votes.

Off Road Award: Mercedes-Benz Unimog is 2010 Cross-Country Vehicle of the Year: For the sixth time running, readers of "Off Road" magazine have voted the Mercedes-Benz Unimog the year's best cross-country vehicle in the "Special-Purpose Vehicles" category. Unimog - able to get through where others cannot even get in. (Image: Daimler)

The eight categories for which readers where invited to cast their votes were “Cross-Country Vehicles”, “Luxury Cross-Country Vehicles”, “Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs)”, “Luxury SUVs”, “Classics”, “Pick-Ups”, “Special-Purpose Vehicles” and “Crossover Vehicles”. Among the special-purpose vehicles – cross-country vehicles used for transporting loads and cargo in remote areas or as a basis for special bodies used by fire-fighters, expeditions and the military – the Unimog easily led the field. Its signature product characteristics, such as its portal axles which provide outstanding off-road capability and its tremendous torsional flexibility combined with exceptional ruggedness and strength, came in for particular praise.
Produced at the Wörth plant since 2002, the high-mobility U 4000 to U 5000 Unimog range is the natural choice for difficult all-terrain operations far from roads and tracks. Its principal applications are in the domains of fire-fighting (especially in the context of forest fires), disaster relief, expedition transport as well as service and maintenance work in areas where access is difficult. As the saying goes: “Unimog vehicles get through where others cannot even get in”.

The Unimog U 4000 and U 5000 models are therefore the ideal complement to the all-terrain implement carriers which make up the U 300 to U 500 range and which are used principally by public service organisations and municipal contractors as well as in the construction and energy sectors, in intra-plant transport applications and for road/rail work. The latest addition to the Unimog family is the compact U 20, which was launched in 2008.

The legendary G-Class also emerged as a firm favourite with the readers: it was voted into first place in the “Luxury Cross-Country Vehicles” category. Another G-Class, in “Edition Pur” guise (produced in 2009 to mark the 30th anniversary of the model series) took second place in the “Classics” category with the same ranking being attained by the M-Class in the “Luxury SUVs” category.

Off-Road magazine has been inviting its readers to vote for the cross-country vehicle of the year since 1982.
